Our basest beggars
Are in the poorest thing superfluous.
Allow not nature more than nature needs,
Man's life is cheap as beast's. Thou art a lady；
If only to go warm were gorgeous,
Why,nature needs, not what thou gorgeous wear'st,
Which scarcely keeps thee warm.

いかに貧しい者でも、その取るに足らぬ持ち物のなかに、
何か余分なものを持っている。
自然が必要とする以外のものを禁じられたら、
人間の生活はケダモノ同然の惨めなものとなろう。
お前は貴婦人だ。ただ暖かければ、
それで立派な衣装だというのなら、
自然はお前が着ているような派手な衣装など必要とはせぬ。
それは暖を取る役には立たないからだ。
